Hi, My son is 5 years old and was diagnosed with mild to moderate SPD when he was 2. Since then he has had intense therapy with an OT that specializes in sensory integration. He has also just begun the ILS program and is doing great in all regards. He has recently started asking me to play organized sports like his older brother but was wondering if there are any sports in particular that are recommended. He is definitely a sensory seeker, likes to be moving and we are still working on his upper body muscle tone. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Water sports?

How about swimming? My son with SPD is a water fiend, and swimming really seems to calm him. It helps that his coach has the patience of a saint!

He sounds like my son.....My son started out with baseball first at 4 y/o and discovered basketball at 6. At the age of nine, he found baseball too boring .... He still continued playing basketball , and loves the running on the court. He also tried wrestling and love it (lots of contacts and inputs) but prefer basketball during the season. This year he will be entering JR HIGH and planning to go out for Track and Field and basketball. He is also taking classes in Tae Kwo Do (since he was 10) and loves it ....LOTS OF INPUT & CONTACT.... I encourage you to have your son to try all sports and find what work best for him or what he loves/enjoys .....My son is the kind of a kid that is always on the go .... My son also does intense bike riding with his Dad. My son finds Tae Kwo Do works best for his sensory need...(his words) GOOD LUCK!!
