SPD?

by Debra
(Texas)

My daughter is 4.5 years old and was diagnosed last October with MERLD, ADHD, and SPD. Ever since November, every time she cries she will ask if she has red eyes. I made the mistake of telling her yes one day and she bursted into a bloody-murder cry! I quickly told her "you have the prettiest blue eyes in the entire world!" and she quickly stopped crying, wiped her tears.

Why does my daughter ask me if she has red eyes every time she cries?

Red Eyes
by: Anonymous

I am by no means a pro on this but ... Being a girl who gets concerned about her looks and such ... I hate being red faced with blood shot eyes when I cry ... then you can tell I've been crying ....

IF it's not some fear of blood, it could just be that she is concerned with the way she looks when she cries... especially if she stops when you tell her she has the prettiest blue eyes you've ever seen.... Sounds like she just wants some reassurance that she is still beautiful, even when she is crying....

But again, I'm no professional ... It's just a thought.

This Site has been SO Helpful
by: Danielle

This site has been so helpful on our journey
of discovering and acknowledging our daughters
differences, in getting the help we needed,
in making us feel like we weren't alone and helpless ( like what we were observing was our imagination).

This site was a place that helped us help our daughter... we noticed things like intense screaming and reactions as a baby/toddler, less fine motor development than her peers and a lot of self stimulation and an absence of age appropriate engagement...

We got her evaluated and after meetings with pre-k teachers and 2 years of OT and a bit of social work... she is functioning very well in school and friendships and other activities....

we would advise everyone who has doubts about their child to seek help early... it CAN make a huge difference

I understand. My daughter freaks out about the sight of blood - not just on her, but on her sisters or anyone else for that matter as well. But she cannot stand to have the band-aid or anything else on her. So we put a band-aid on her to calm her down and within seconds the band-aid is in the trash, on the floor, but not on her.

Thanks for the comment.

Fear of Blood
by: Anonymous

This may sound strange but, it could have something to do with a fear of blood. My daugther has SPD and gets hysterical if she even thinks she sees blood (especially on herself). A tiny papercut is very scary to her until it's bandaged (yep, we go through a lot of bandaids).
