SPD

Since my earliest memory(age 7) I have been bothered by 'people' sounds(eating, coughing, sniffing, slurping drinks, sucking sweets, hicoughs, false teeth noises, saliva sounds when talking)

Some visual things bother me too, twirling hair, circling foot, biting nails. I say bother me but this has totally ruined my life. I lost my job(I was always off ill due to 'overload' of these noises.I cant sit with people/socialise as all these things are part of everyday life.

Ive seen several psychologists but nothing has helped as they don't have a diagnosis but refer to this has a noise phobia. They made a tape whereby I had to listen to all these things and it has made me worse. I now have to turn certain programmes of the telly because of these noises. Do you think I have SPD, I am desperate for a correct diagnosis and help as my daughter is now displaying the same 'symptoms' although my son does not seem to be suffering to date.

I utterly understand
by: 12 year old anonymous

I'm the exact same way! My little sister gets so annoyed when I ask her to stop doing stuff like sucking on candy noisily and sniffling. It turned out that I have SPD. I'm going to receive treatment as soon as my dad sells his truck to get the funds for it.

I understand

Julie,
I completely understand where you are coming from. I am 34 and have had "noise issues" since I was a child. I just found out recently that there is actually a name for it. I don't go to movies. I don't go to restaurants where they serve chips. There were a lot of events I didn't attend because of the "noise issues." I can totally relate. Yes, I think this is part of SPD. I have been to many doctors who have NO IDEA what I am talking about. But now that I have researched- I am so grateful that there are other people just like me. I swear I thought I was the only person like this. Now that you know it is SPD, you can go online and find others that are like us. I hope that helps. If you want to email- sarmichelle@aol.com.

Hypo/Hyper

Julie: have you checked with any of your medical doctors about hyposensitivity or hypersensitivity in auditory defensiveness & visual input? Also, for your daughter, if you haven't heard of the book called "Sensory Secrets ~ How to Jump Start Learning in Your Child", you may want to try and find it.(Amazon.com has it I think - new about 16.00 US dollars) There is a fantastic checklist in there that is very user friendly and takes SPD through 7 stages. Keep looking ~ there has to be an answer out there for you. Also, there's a nice symptoms checklist on this website. Sue
