Sensory Processing Disorder and stress

by Melissa

Does anybody have any literature that explains the effects of stress or forcing new/unfamiliar environments and people on infants with SPD? My son was recently diagnosed and I am trying to find information for the judge in my divorce regarding overnight visits with an absentee father and the effects it could have on our 16 month old son at this stage in his development and treatment. Any advice or help would be appreciated.

Response to divorce and SPD
by: Anonymous

Hello,
I read your question about wanting to know if there was any literature regarding the effects of your son being in your ex husbands stressful and unstable environment and wondered if you found any answers. I am is the exact same position as you are - except my soon to be ex's girlfriend only has 3 kids. How are you doing and how has your situation turned out? I wish you luck.

SPD and stress
by: Anonymous

I see your original post was over a year ago, so hopefully you will be able to read my concern. I too am going through a divorce and my 9 year old son has SPD. My soon to be ex-husband aburptly left our family when he met another woman. It's been really hard on my son with SPD and there have been a lot of emotional outbursts with him. My ex wants to have joint custody and have the kids live with me for one week and then him for one week, with the boys constantly going back and forth. I can't imagine doing that as an adult, let alone as a child with SPD that struggles with transitions. I guess my question to you is, were you able to provide the court with any evidence about how stress adversely affects your child with SPD? My ex's new girlfriend has 4 children. Moving my 2 boys into a place where there would be 6 kids is hard for me to wrap my brain around. My son has a difficult time in chaotic environments. Any advice would greatly be appreciated as I am trying to have full custody of my children and continue providing them with a stable home life.

Thank you.

A Good Book
by: Kathy

One of the best books that I have read on the subject of SPD and stress is called The Ultimate Guide to Sensory Processing Disorder: Easy, Everyday Solutions to Sensory Challenges by Roya Ostovar, Ph.D.
