Sensory Issues

My grandson was three in January.. He has Hypothyroidism. He was on med since the week after he was born until he turned 3. Blood test show it is under control. We are concerned by some of his actions, and no one seems to know what to do. He is very smart. Mom is a teacher. Loves school, but will NOT sit for story time. He can be fine one minute, than totally loose it the next, for know apparent reason. He often says he can't do something because "his hand are to slippery." He will hurt other kids, and when we tell him not to do that, he says "but I want to hit them." Then he will tell them "sorry."

He is bothered by wind when outside, but would play in the rain. He hates having his picture taken. Went to Walt Disney World and was very good. Liked to look at the characters, but did not care to be touched by them. He does everything a 3 year old should be doing and more, but his behavior is just crazy. Something is making him feel this way, we just are totally clueless on what do do. Does this sound like a sensory issue, or just behavioral problem. No one wants to listen so us. HELP

It does sound a lot like my son who has SPD. You should ask your doctor if there is a Occupational Therapist near you. My son is 8 and has been dealing with SPD all along and I just found out.I think the earlier you figure it out the better. I would still not know now but we received a flyer in the kids folder talking about it from the school. Although doctors do not consider SPD a diagnosis yet they do send you to Occupational Therapy. It's mostly like play but it stuff they probably wouldn't do so they can work through things.

Also about the hand my son would say they were sticky. I bought spray deodorant and sprayed his hand and that has helped.I don't know if any of this will help but I wish you luck!

Hi! My son is 5 years old and has SPD and while his symptoms aren't exactly the same I see many resemblances. This site has a symptom checklist that is very helpful! That is a good starting point. From their I'd talk two his pediatrician and hopefully they will be helpful (but I worn you some are not). OT seems helpful in dealing with many of these symptoms. Hope this helps!
