Inner ear problems??

by Sally
(Cincinnati Ohio )

I have an almost 6 year old Boy he was tested for SPD, and although he is on the charts as having some SPD, he did not score high enough for any therapy, well we have been living with it perfectly fine, but he said something the other day that I was wondering if it was something to do with SPD or not, he said that when he is sitting still or laying down, he feels like he is still moving, I know that this has to do with balance and inner ear problems, but is it also a SPD symptom?

Any help would be appreciated

A short answer - yes it is an inner ear problem.
by: SensoryOT

It sounds like he has a sensitive vestibular system. This can be re mediated. First, I would have him visit an ENT to make sure there is nothing medically or structurally going on to cause a problem (i.e. fluid, damage). Once that is ruled out, then you can go on to therapy. I would seek out an OT evaluation - make sure it is someone with a sensory background. You can see an explanation of vestibular functioning in my blog post at:

With intervention, this can be helped.
