Chapped Lips

My 7 year old with SPD has developed severe chapped lips because he can't stop licking them.

Has anyone else experienced this and if so what did you do to treat it?

Extra Virgin Organic Coconut Oil helped son stop licking lips
by: K.Davies

My son who is now 9 years old, would licked his lips until bruised and swollen. This went on for a couple of years. i used different suggested ailments/lip balm with no lasting cure.

Sometimes in 2017, however, i started using Extra Virgin Organic Coconut Oil as his head-to-toes body cream and after repeated use, I noticed that he had stopped licking his lips. The use of the coconut oil was not intended for this purpose but I'm glad it helps. So, continue its use for this reason; and my son has not had the problem since.

I use the Extra Virgin Organic Coconut Oil from his head to his toes

Vaseline hazards!
by: Pamela

Hi just an FYI: Vaseline is petroleum product & therefore carcinogenic :( I know I used it as kid but it’s really bad for our health! I use un petroleum balm which is same concept but no toxins! Also Burts bees has unscented chapstick with only beeswax & olive oil & natural stuff!

While he is sleeping
by: Anonymous

Our 3 1/2 year old is a kiddo who will not put anything on his lips and will get them to the red bloody stage. So we just put on Aquaphor when he is sleeping. Sounds terrible but it works.

My son is 4 and he does this as well. he is always licking his lips and then when they are realy sore he starts to pick at them. We use chapstick & vaseline at night. We have also brought him to a mirror to show him his lips... when he sees that he is hurting himself he will stop for a few days. Also we make a huge deal if he is not licking his lips, telling him what a good job he is doing & clap for him.

name of medicine?
by: Anonymous

What is the name of the medicine that your doctor prescribed? My son won't let me put anything on his lips. I wait for him to fall asleep at night and then have been applying an over the counter lip renewal but it hasn't completely healed. Thank you so much!

Chapped Lips for Years
by: SDP Family of Boys

I have 22 yr old Stepson w/SPD who had yearly outbreaks of chapped lips that would become infected since 3rd Grade. Vaseline works great if they are not resistant to the "slimy" & "heavy" feeling of the lotion. My 6 yr has recently begun to show signs of the "chapped lips" ordeal & I had the Doc write a script for a lotion that within 2 days healed them. Then nightly we place the lotion on the lips using a q-tip to ensure the lips stay smooth & moist. Drink plenty of water. Say " Your tongue needs to stay in your month" for conditioning purposes.

here's what we do. . . make sure he is drinking enough water every day, and is on a good multivitamin, use germolene on his lips as often as possible. We also put waterproof sunscreen on every day, don't know if that makes a difference or not.

Chapped Lips

We have the same issue every winter with our 5 year old. Luckily, he has always been good at taking medications, so at bedtime, I explain that we are going to put "lip meddies" on and I put plain vaseline on his lips. Amazingly, it works for us!

Find a fun way to slab a non taste/non smell ointment on his lips at bedtime, when he is less likely to rub or lick it off. Good Luck!!!
