SPD Awareness Ribbon Color(s)

by Jackie
(Terre Haute, IN, USA)

Hello!

Our three year old son was recently diagnosed with SPD. Prior to his diagnosis, we never even heard of the disorder. So, I am trying to read everything I can get my hands on and I find myself sharing the information with many people who know my son.

Sharing the SPD information led me to wonder what is/are the awareness color(s) for SPD. I have been searching online and have not found the specific term of "SPD" when linking with color(s). Is/are there any color(s) specifically for SPD, or would it fall under the ribbon categories of Special Needs or Autism?

Thanks for your time and attention to this question! :)

THAT is a great question! You know, I don't know the answer to it. However, Kathleen Morris of SI Focus Magazine is the one who has organized the SPD Awareness Days/Weeks the past few years. SHE may know the answer... I am not sure if a color has been established yet, but she may know. OR, she may know of a resource for awareness buttons/cards, etc. that I am also not aware of.

Can I ask a favor? If you do find out, can you please let us know!? I know many who would like to have this information. Our last awareness event was in the month of October 2007... it will come again next October. Meanwhile, keep spreading the word... THANKS!!! Our children thank you.

You may also want to consider becoming an SPD Parent SHARE Host? A group of parents helping other parents whose children have SPD. Go check out the site and our group... www.spdparentshare.com. If you are interested in becoming one, please contact Michelle Morris through that site.

I hope you find the answer for us! Let us know if Kathleen knows what color, ok? Thanks. Sorry I couldn't help more.

SPD Awareness color
by: Mim Ochsenbein, MSW, OTR/L

The color(s) for SPD awareness is "Reflex Blue" - essentially its a deep blue/violet. So you will see lots of deep blue or purple blue colors used.

SPD Decals
by: Jay Begley

Hello Everybody. I am a graphic artist. I design for a living and love making decals for friends. This time I took it a step further for a dear friend of mine. Her child is SPD. I learned a lot through her and her child. I found out that I am also SPD to some degree. I did some research on a SPD Awareness ribbon so I could custom make one for her. All the details I found pointed to dark Blue and White or Dark Blue and Orange with a series of waves running through the design in some way. I chose the first color combination as it would yield better contrast. Feel free to contact me on my FB page in a private message and I will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have regarding the design. I am not asking for money. I just want to help bring awareness.

SPD Awareness Cards
by: A Sensory Life

I recently created SPD awareness cards for parents to give to those in the community who just dont seem to understand their child. For instance at the park or grocery store when you are given the glare....just hand them a card. I have been a sensory OT for 19 years and this is one thing I hear from parents on a regular basis. My cards are available at asensorylife.blogspot.com or understandingspd.com

Silver ribbon
by: Jessica

WOW! I'm so glad I found this site and this particular link. I've spent the last two hours online on this topic. What I found was this: www.silverribbon.org
It's the brain dysfunction/disorders support site and it now includes SPD under it's "disorder umbrella". I haven't found a ribbon specific for SPD. This is as close as I've found. Hope it helps!!

How about we use orange? Orange is a good October color and it also speaks of the loud visual effects that people with SPD either suffer from or are drawn to.

No Official Color For SPD
by: Jackie Norris

Okay everybody, I received another email today (2-28-08) from the publisher of S.I. Focus Magazine, Kathleen Morris. According to her, there are no "official" colors for sensory awareness. Please read her email as follows:

"Hello Jackie,
This is Kathleen Morris, publisher of S.I. Focus Magazine. I started a national awareness campaign through the magazine in 2005. October is National Sensory Awareness Month each year now. Last year we had over 350 volunteers across the country with additional volunteers in four other countries. There is, at this point, no official 'colors' for sensory awareness. You may add your name to our database if you would like and we will send you one of our NSAM volunteer packets this summer. It is meant to be a grassroots effort to assist people to raise awareness in their immediate communities to help their immediate needs to educate their school,
physicians and families in the community. We do have posters for you to display, handouts, press releases and this year we may add bracelets."

Kind regards,
Kathleen Morris, Publisher
S.I. Focus Magazine
www.SIfocus.com

So, even though I thought we had a color (reflex blue) yesterday, I guess we do not. Sorry that I gave you misleading information yesterday. Our saga continues! :)

Thanks again! Jackie Norris

Reflex Blue-SPD Awareness Color
by: Jackie Norris

Hi Michele,

I posted a question on the blog Feb 5, 2008 concerning SPD Awareness Ribbon Color(s). You were not aware of the color or even if there was one. You did, however, give me a name as a jumping board for the search to our answer (which I greatly appreciated). After sending emails to various people, I finally received an answer. I received the following email this morning (2-27-08):

"Thank you for your passionate support of our cause. We sincerely appreciate all the help we can get in spreading the word about SPD. We do indeed have our own ribbon color, which is reflex blue. Please let me know if you need any further information that would be helpful to your efforts.

Thanks again,
Caraly Walker (caraly@spdfoundation.net)
SPD Foundation"

So, reflex blue is our SPD color! :) I looked it up and it's a pretty, medium bright shade of blue.

Thanks again, Jackie Norris
