Sensory-Impulsivity

by Danny Ray Crum Jr

Have you ever heard of a child who has either ADHD or SPD or both, or has one of features of the other?

Think of a child who is impulsive in order to be sensory avoidant and/or sensory seeking.

Me again
by: MAryC

You described my son to a tee. He is hyperactive/ impulsive, has trouble transitioning from one thing to another....sometimes it's avoiding one thing and seeking the other....sometimes it's seeking one thing until they almost immediately seek something else.....it could be sensory processing disorder rather than ADHD, but meds only help certain things in the brain.

Meds are prescribed for ADHD, not sensory or autism. It's just how it is. Not every description under ADHD can be helped by meds, not everything under ASD can be helped by meds. It's just the way that the brain works.

These details I would say ask more of your doc.

Sensory-Impulsivity

What about the concept of being "sensory-impulsive", meaning that the child seems to hyperactively/impulsively transition from one thing to another....sometimes it's avoiding one thing and seeking the other....sometimes it's seeking one thing until they almost immediately seek something else.....I wonder if this could be sensory processing disorder rather than ADHD....perhaps the ADHD is a secondary feature and fooled the doctors....but I just don't know for sure...all I know is that the medications and treatment to date have not made a difference.

ADHD, SPD, AND Autism
by: MaryC

At first, the docs thought it was just ADHD and SPD, but then they realized it was mostly communicative and he got Autism (ASD). These things happen. Do NOT be afraid to ask for help and get second opinions.

Yes... many of the symptoms of SPD look similar to symptoms of ADHD. Some kids have just SPD, while others have both SPD and ADHD. It is not easy telling the difference between the two.

Unusual responses to sensory stimuli like being touched or moved is a major red flag of SPD
