My 5 year old daughter SPD, DD who knows?

by Jenny
(Maryland)

My 5 year old daughter has been going to OT now for 9 months and they seem to think she could have this disorder and could be why she has so many delays. Her doctor's still think it is just DD with some SI issues. I am told all the time that she just doesn't fit in a box. They can give me a list of every thing she isn't but can't tell me what she has for sure.

As a parent it is very frustrating. She is in Special Education, OT, PT, and Speech. I think the worst is when other parents looked at her and shake there heads, or say to me what is wrong with her........I have no answer except nothing it's just Rylee. Some people are so rude. She is so loving and sweet that is what they should see, she craves touch she doesn't run from it. Any thoughts or help would be awesome from people who understand......

My son is very social and happy fun kid. He has been kicked out of 3 daycare and people look at my husband and I as though we don't discipline him. He has been out of daycare for 2 weeks. THis week is the first time that he has received all smiley faces (no x's meaning not following orders/directions). I am taking him to a child psy in a few weeks. We are figuring out what triggers him to not listen and be uncooperative. It seems that the chaos of the daycare was over stimulation and he never had the "decompression" I hope that we get answers soon. I am thinking mild spd as he is finally doing much better at his school. He is working with the OT and psy at school and it seems that we are finally getting somwhere. He is much better now and is listening so much and having so many more appropriate feelings. My mom has been watching until he gets out of school then we are going to try a home daycare. Good luck.

It is a struggle for sure. Rylee has been to developmental peds, OT, PT, speech Evals, Neuro, and Neurosurgery so far. They now want to send her to Neuro psyc. i just keep getting told she is a very sweet loving child who has global delays ranging from 1 to 3 years. She doesn't fit any the the typical diagnosis and every test they have done has no answers. Her OT is the one that notied that Rylee has tactile, vestibular, propriocption, audiortory, and other sensory issues and brought up SPD. No one thinks she is on the autism spectrum because she is to social and loving. She is a mystery to all, I will continue to get her the support she needs. Good Luck with your son as well.

Go by your instincts and try to concentrate on the positives she has.

Make sure you look after yourself and get support dealing with the frustrations and life this will enable you to stay strong and well
