A brighter future?

by Abby Normal

I am a 16 year old, and i have a Sensory Processing Disorder. Looking at this checklist now I can remember experiencing most of the items in tactile defensive, poor muscle tone, and auditory dysfunction. Here is the twist; I have known about it my whole life and as I have grown, the incidences have become fewer and fewer. I am not nearly as challenged as I was 6 years ago. I do still have episodes my family calls "sensory overload" when all these symptoms come back for an hour or two, but never more than an evenings worth of pain.

I don't have any questions, I just wanted to let some of you know, who may just be discovering this disorder in yourself or people close to you; this isn't the end of the world. Aside from taking alternate physical education I live a successful, normal life. I have a boyfriend of 6 months, a scholarship to an art program, and am part of a local girlscout troop.

I just want to say thank you for posting your comment about your experience with SPD. I have a son that is two years old and today i was talking with his developmentalist and we think he very likely has Spd. I am glad to hear that you are doing so well and are happy. you brought a good sense of relief to me to see into a brighter future.

thanks for your support

I often wondered if my son suffered from this disorder. Now, that he has been diagnosed, we have hope that with the appropriate therapies, he's able to become a successful and normal person. I'm not in denial about him, he's a great kid. He will soon turn 3 and i have high hopes that this will become a "minor" issue in his life. Thanks for sharing your experience and good luck to you!

A brighter future?
by: Darian

Abby,

Thank you for writing your post. My son is almost two years old and has just been diagnosed as SPD with tactile defensiveness and auditory defensiveness. It's good to hear about someone with similar issues is able to cope with this and be very successful. We are in therapy now and hope to help our son cope as well as you are coping.

Sincerely,
Darian

Hi Abby
Thank you very much for posting your comments on this website. My son who is 10 has recently been diagnosed with SPD. Although he is receiving treatment and doing well, as a parent i have been worried about what the future holds for him. My biggest concern has been his behaviour, so i am delighted to here of your experiences and how well you are doing.
Thanks
Carmel
