SPD and clothing nightmare

by Anonymous
(USA)

My daughter is 10 and has SPD and gets OT at school and did work with an outside OT 2 years ago. She has meltdowns every morning before school about her clothes not feeling right, especially pants. We have tried yoga pants but she says they are not snug enough. We have tried adjustable waist jeans and they are either too tight or too loose and she plays with the elastic waistband in school which distracts her. We have tried jeggings and skinny jeans and they are too tight. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Gluten and clothing discomfort
by: Anonymous

WOW! I never heard of a corellation between gluten and clothing. We had bloodwork done and it came up neg. for gluten but we have reduced gluten in her diet and have seen some positive behavioral changes. How does the gluten reduce clothing discomfort, especially in the morning before eating anything?

Clothing Issues
by: Anonymous

I understand the frustration that daily meltdowns can cause especially when you're trying to get out the door in the morning! We've had similar issues with my daughter in the past.

For us, going gluten free has eliminated about 85% of her issues with clothing. It is rare for us to have a meltdown now and she is even wearing jeans, something I never thought would be possible (though she still won't wear underwear with them!:) I would highly recommend trying a gluten free diet.

We also let her wear whatever she wants no matter how ridiculous it looks (as long as she's appropriately covered).

She wears skirts/dresses most often. You may want to try going that route and avoid the pants altogether. Though, if she's like my daughter, it's not really about the clothes per se (i.e. some things that didn't bother her one day would make her crazy the next).
Best of luck to you!

Don't bother with jeans!
by: Anonymous

As a teenager with SPD, do not try jeans. I've been trying to cope with them for years, but I just can't. I took Cognative Behavioral Therapy for a year and was deemed good to go, but it is still tricky for me. Jeans feel like having toast rubbed down your legs (that's the best way I can describe), and they are incredibly stiff to try to move in.

Not particularly helpful, I know, but just thought I'd let you know.
