Potty Training

My 3 yr old son has issues with overstimulating sights and sounds. He can only handle so much before he has a meltdown. He is also sensory seeking as well.

He goes to therapy once a week and he has a sensory diet at home. He was doing really well with his potty training and then all of a sudden he has refused to go potty. I know that forcing them to go is not a good idea.

I've tried stickers, but that doesn't work anymore. I would praise him every time he went as well.

Do children with sensory processing disorder have a harder time with potty training? I don't know if I should wait a few more months or try another method.

I have 5 children with one on the spectrum with sensory issues and a 3 year old with sensory as well. Our 8 1/2 yr old son was urine trained at 3.5 years and bowel trained just this year at 8. He has low muscle tone and tactile issues and this was a major issue with him.

We still have accidents and he on Miralax to prevent constipation. This is OUR story and I am not saying do what we did but I tried bio-feedback, bribes, rewards, etc. Nothing happened and we just waited until he was ready.

Talk to your O.T and see if they can help. Good luck

Our oldest son was 3 1/2 when he finally was potty trained & he ended up just doing it on his own. We pushed from 2 1/2 to 3 & gave up for a while & he just all of the sudden starting telling us it was time to go.

At 5 he was diagnosed ADHD & recently diagnosed as also having SPD and with both diagnosis, it made us realize that it could be the reason that he potty trained so late. BUT, every kid is different & each of them will do it in their own time & their own way.

We introduced it to our 2nd son at 2 1/2 and didn't push at all and he was potty trained before his 3rd birthday.

I truly think the key is to just make it fun, keep it stress free & let it happen when he wants it to with out pushing it. Its awesome for us to get out of diapers but to push it can make it miserable. Just my two cents
